Hello world! My name is Immanuel. People usually call me ifei on X or YT. I'm an orchestral media composer. I've always loved music, but have always deliberately tried to stay away from "doing it seriously" because I was worried that I would lose the joy of music, the only single thing that has constantly brought joy in my life. But in October of this year, something changed.
Malfoid. Yes, literally, Malfoid. For those of you who don't know who Malfoid is, she's basically a reimagination of Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter as a girl. I can write a whole separate blog on why Malfoid would make Harry Potter so much better but I'll keep that for another time. I wanted to contribute to the community on X by making my own iteration of Malfoid and decided to adapt a comic by MaroonR19 and commission Meariri as the VA. I then did the editing as well as chose the music. It blew up on X, and I was super happy that: I got to make beautiful art and it was recognized by the community.
However, I didn't write the music for that animation. I used Yuki Hayashi's music. Yuki Hayashi is one of my favorite media composers (see my about page to see all my influences) and his style fits the animation very well. It was from this moment that I knew I wanted to write my own music for my animation. It was also from this moment that I started learning about the term "media composer"
I learned about it from Christian Henson, another favorite media composer of mine who not only write brilliant music but also published a ton of high quality educational content on YouTube. I've learnt a lot from him. Then I started by writing a study, then a sketch, then a symphony. To be honest, most of them are pretty eh, but I do learn a lot everytime I write music. I use Musescore because I can't afford a DAW (lol)
The first time I wrote to picture was my interpretation of Asuzu's Sectumsempra Incident. It was the first time I've ever written to picture in my life and I was overwhelmed initially. I had to use a plugin for musescore to sync the picture to the music. Eventually, I got it though. It was really fun, as writing functional music is totally different from absolute music.
Ever since then, I've started listening to more media composers as well as normal composers to find inspiration, techniques, and so on. I'm a self-taught anyway, so I need to listen to a lot of great composers. I'm so excited to share my progress and music on this website, so stay tuned!
